Biography

Dame Tracey Karima Emin DBE RA (born July 3, 1963) is an English artist known for her autobiographical and confessional artwork. She works in various media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, film, photography, neon text, and sewn appliqué. Once considered the “enfant terrible” of the Young British Artists in the 1980s, Emin is now a Royal Academician.

In 1997, her work “Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963–1995,” a tent with the names of everyone she had ever slept with, was exhibited at Charles Saatchi’s Sensation exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. That same year, she gained media attention for swearing on live TV during a discussion program called “The Death of Painting.”

In 1999, Emin had her first solo exhibition in the United States at Lehmann Maupin Gallery, titled “Every Part of Me’s Bleeding.” She was also a Turner Prize nominee that year, exhibiting “My Bed,” a readymade installation of her unmade bed with used condoms and blood-stained underwear, reflecting a period of severe emotional turmoil.

Emin is a prominent speaker and lecturer, having presented at institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Royal Academy of Arts, and Tate Britain, discussing the links between creativity and autobiography. In December 2011, she was appointed Professor of Drawing at the Royal Academy, becoming one of the first two female professors in its history. Emin lived in Spitalfields, East London, before returning to Margate, where she funds TKE Studios, providing workspace for aspiring artists.
